Providence's largest neighborhood was farmland in the last quarter of the 17th Century, and slowly developed into a residential neighborhood, first along Westminster Street, the main thoroughfare to Olneyville, then in response to the introduction of omnibus and trolley lines from 1855 onwards. The mostly middle class one and two family houses surround conspicuous buildings such as the Cranston Street Armory, and a number of important churches. After a decline in response to the departing industry, and the negative effect of the construction of route 10, which isolated parts of the West End, the area is now experiencing a revival.
