This neighborhoods calm and spacious residential character stems from the fact that it was developed rather late in the 19th century, and had little industrial development. By the early 20th Century it had grown into a middle and upper-middle class neighborhood with a high percentage of owner occupied hoses. Comparable in many ways with the College Hill area in the eastern section of Providence, Mount Pleasant also houses a number of important educational institutions, such as Rhode Island College, Mount Pleasant High School, and LaSalle Academy.
