The Hartford neighborhood in the westernmost part of the city is the site of a former soapstone quarry used by the Narragansett Indians for the manufacturing of soapstone dishes, pots and pipes. Initially consisting mainly of farmland, the early 19th Century saw the establishment of mills along the Woonasquatucket river, and accompanying working class housing. Two major housing projects, Hartford Park and Manton Heights were built in the 1950s, however both of them had greatly deteriorated by the 1970s.
