This neighborhood in the northeast section of Providence was settled by farmers and innkeepers in the 17th century along Pawtucket Road. When streetcar service began in 1875, suburban residential development began. In the 1920s Russian Jews moved here and established a substantial Jewish community. Since the 1940s a large section of the area has been occupied by Miriam Hospital.
